Anglo American reopens copper mines in Chile after quake

WorldRich.net 10-03-02 Xinhua

Global miner Anglo American said Monday that it had resumed operations at Los Bronces and El
Soldado copper mines in Chile, which were closed due to the massive 8.8-magnitude quake.

The operations restarted early Sunday at the two mines that produce around 280,000 tons of cooper
per year, said an Anglo American spokesman. But the energy supply was still unstable.

The Los Bronces mine located 65 km northeast of Santiago, while the El Soldado mine was 132 km
north of Santiago.

Chile, the world's largest copper supplier, produced 5.41 million tons of copper in 2009.

More than 700 people have been killed by the Saturday quake, one of the world's most powerful in
decades. The epicenter was only 115 km from Concepcion, Chile's second largest city with a
population of 670,000.
