TOKYO, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened sharply lower Monday with the key Nikkei index down 1.3 percent.

At 9:15 a.m., the benchmark Nikkei 225 Average lost 120.54 points, from Friday to 9,132.92.

The broader Topix index contracted 7.94 points, or 0.96 percent, to 823.30.
